Yesterday my husband Chris Swann and I attended a prayer breakfast held in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. The event was held at MiraCosta College and hosted by the North San Diego County NAACP.
I am so thankful for Dr King's dream because I realize the freedoms I live with today are a direct result of his dream. The occasion was incredibly moving and inspiring. Just having the opportunity to come together with so many individuals who have benefited from Dr King's dream was a joy in and of itself.
Each year the NAACP selects one individual from our community who has volunteered and served with passion and commitment to the betterment of our people. I was so proud that the co-founder of my church, Mrs Ethel Buchanon and her son, former NFL player Willie Buchanon we're nominated. I must say though, I was ecstatic when my long time mentor Raye Clendening was announced as this years recipient. Working in the field of education, Raye has dedicated her life to making sure young people, especially women, obtain higher education and much need life skills. What a well deserved reward for an outstanding woman. Congratulations Raye!
